Innovative Bachelor’s Programme “International Health Sciences” at Fulda University, Germany

Borders don't stop diseases – neither influenza, nor AIDS, nor the typical diseases associated with poverty, such as tuberculosis and malaria. Likewise, the social, political, and economic causes of disease are not confined to individual countries. Social megatrends such as urbanisation, climate change, flexibilisation of work, demographic change, and digitisation affect all countries and, thus, the entire world population. The impact of these megatrends on people’s health, however, are heterogeneous since health opportunities are unequally distributed within and between countries. Particularly emerging and developing countries face a double burden of disease. This situation implies a growing need for the regional and global coordination and enforcement of health policy decisions and measures.

In October 2018, the Fulda University of Applied Sciences will initiate a new study programme entitled “International Health Sciences” (HIS). It is the first bachelor’s course in Germany addressing the health challenges in the globalised world. It provides students with the opportunity to complete undergraduate studies with a focus on international or global health in Germany and prepare for pertinent Master courses. The HIS programme conveys scientific and practical knowledge about global health and trains public health professionals with special qualifications for health-related activities at international level.

Graduates will be prepared for working in different areas at the international level or with reference to international activities. A Bachelor's degree in “International Health Sciences” will open up a broad set of opportunities to graduates in international development organisations, in the health sector in Germany and other countries, and in globally operating institutions and companies. Alternatively, they may pursue a subsequent Master’s degree in a related field, such as Public Health.

The programme is bilingual (English, German) and structured differently for students whose primary language is German and for students with other native languages. Minimum language proficiency is required in English (at least B2 level) and German (minimum B1 level) in order to assure the necessary level of understanding. In the course of the HIS programme, students can choose between three specialisations, namely Health Promotion, Health Economics and Health Policy, or Healthcare Management. One semester and an internship abroad complement the study programme at Fulda University.

Application for IHS in 2018/19 is running until October 15, 2018. If you know someone in your working or private environment who might be interested in such an academic programme, please let him or her know about the opportunity provided by the Fulda University. Further information and an application link can be found at https://www.hs-fulda.de/en/studies/departments/nursing-and-health-sciences/study-programmes/undergraduate-programmes/international-health-sciences/ (in German under: https://www.hs-fulda.de/pflege-und-gesundheit/studium/bachelorstudiengaenge/internationale-gesundheitswissenschaften-bsc/).

For any further question or inquiry, please feel free to contact Jens Holst (jens.holst@pg.hs-fulda.de) (currently Assistant Professor of Medicine with a focus on Global Health) or Annika Salzmann (Annika.salzmann@pg.hs-fulda.de) (Coordinator for International Affairs).
